Career Research

Grade 07 Introduction to Career Research Process Career Research includes explorations designed to identify your interests and abilities in order to help you focus on education and occupations that are right for you.

  • To complete this competency, you will take the “ WOIS Career Interest Areas” questionnaire and create a list of Washington State schools where you could be trained for these careers.

Before you start this activity, make sure you have the WOIS Site Key which is available from your Junior High & Beyond teacher. You also need to create a WOIS Portfolio which will be used to store your documents.

Junior High & Beyond Career Interest Areas Activity

The activity helps you match your interests with types of careers.

  1. Go to www.wois.org and log on with your school’s Site Key. Your Junior High & Beyond teacher will provide the code.
  2. Click on "Assessments" on the left side of the page.
  3. Click on the “Tools, click on “Career Interest Areas.”
  4. While taking this survey of your preferences, quickly select the activity that you would prefer. Don’t spend much time thinking about it. Go with your first impression.
  5. When you finish answering all the questions, type your name in the box, then click on “Find my interest areas.”
  6. The next page should be titled "Career Interests for (your name)."
  7. Save the bar graph to your WOIS Portfolio by clicking on “Save results to my Portfolio.”  (You may have to Create a New Account.) After saving your results, click on “Return to your Career Interest Areas results page.”
  8. PRINT OUT THIS INFORMATION (it will be two pages).
  9. Find your highest score (longest set of red bars), and click on the title of interest area on the left side of the graph.
  10. On the "Occupations" page, click on a career path that interests you, and choose an occupation. If you don't find an occupation you are interested in within this interest areas, click "Return to results" and click the title of the next highest interest area.
  11. Once you find an occupation that interests you, click on its blue number.
  12. Near the top of the occupation's information page, click on the term "Educational Programs" in the second line of blue listings.
  13. Next, click on the Educational Program of your choice. (There may be only one.)
  14. Near the top of the Educational Program's page, click on “Select Topics to View,” check “Schools,” “Show Description,” and the “Add to Portfolio.” The data will be saved in the Career Research section of your WOIS Portfolio. You may either “Return to WOIS descriptions” or “Go to your Portfolio.”
Personal Education Plan (PEP)

The Personal Education Plan (PEP) is a list of courses you plan to take in order to meet high school graduation requirements and your post high school goals.

  • To complete the Personal Education Plan (PEP) requirement for the 7th grade, you must create and save your PEP to the “File Management” section in your WOIS Portfolio as an ”Education Plan" type.

Use these links to go to the Personal Education Plan (PEP) 8-12 and Graduation Credit Checklist. Your Junior High & Beyond teacher will review your completed forms. Your PEP must be saved to the “File Management” section in your WOIS Portfolio as an “Education Plan” type.

Letters of Recommendation

A Letter of Recommendation is a formal, typewritten letter written by an adult that addresses your personal qualities, accomplishments, education, volunteer and community experiences. These letters may come from teachers, counselors, coaches, employers or others who know you well. A Letter of Recommendation may be used by potential employers, colleges or training institutions. It is highly recommended that you have at least one uploaded to Portfolio.  Click here for a Letter of Recommendation Form.  As a student, you may print out this form, fill it in, and give it to the person who will be writing your letter.

Awards and Certificates

Awards, certificates or letter of participation from school, sports, church, work or volunteer and community activities can be listed. News articles and pictures may be included.

  • Start adding to the “Awards/Scholarships/Honors” section of your WOIS Portfolio.
Best Works

In this section of your WOIS Portfolio, you can enter information about reports, projects, presentations, or other works you are proud of and details to remember for later reference. If your best work is stored on a server that can be accessed through the Internet, you may enter a URL that will bring up the best work. Some items you might consider recording include an essay, poetry, art, sports, CAD, lab write-up, letter, report, exam, or class project.

  • Best Works may be saved in your WOIS portfolio under “File Management” as a “Best Works” type.
Personal Data/Activities

In this section of your WOIS Portfolio you should list items that will be useful for your current and future job and post-secondary training applications. You should consider listing evidence that demonstrates academic records, school clubs, organization/community service, special interests/hobbies/talents, job shadows, internships, Work Based Learning, athletics, and church/extracurricular/non-school activities.

  • Create/add/save data/activities to your WOIS Portfolio in “Awards/Scholarships/Honors,”  “School Involvement,” or “ Work or Community Experience” as appropriate.
Personal Statement

A personal statement is a philosophical statement of your goals/aspirations. In this section of your portfolio you should store an essay focused on your goals/aspirations for your future including an explanation of how your current studies are preparing you for that future.

  • Create/edit your personal statement. Save it to the “File Management” section in your WOIS Portfolio as a "Personal Statement”  type.
